Font Troubleshooting

For Windows 

This website uses Dynamic Fonts to display Indian languages. This means you should not need to download any fonts. However, we do occasionally receive feedback that the fonts are not visible. If you have problems viewing the Indian language scripts, you could try the following steps:

         Netscape Users (Netscape 4.03 to 4.76) 
         Internet Explorer 
                         IE 5.5 to 6.0 
                        IE 4.0 to 5.0 
         Download Fonts (if nothing else works) 

For Linux 

       Linux users will need to download the font. Please follow instructions given. 

           If you have root permission 
           If you do not have root permission 


Windows 

Netscape Users 

This site can be viewed using Netscape 4.03 to 4.76. If you have these browser versions and still cannot see Indian language scripts, then:

       1.Go to Edit > Preferences > Appearance > Fonts. Ensure that the option "Use  document-specified fonts, including Dynamic Fonts" is selected 
       2.Clear the cache of your browser 

             1.Open the Edit menu of your browser and choose Preferences 
                 2.Click the Advanced category and select Cache 
                 3.Click the "Clear Disk Cache button" and the "Clear Memory Cache" button 

             4.Click OK 
       3.Restart the browser or open the site in a new instance of the browser window  


Windows

  Internet Explorer Users 

  IE 5.5 to 6.0 
  IE 5.5 and IE 6.0 do not display the Indian language fonts correctly. This is due to some changes made in their display parameters. We do not have a solution to this problem, though we are working on it. Please bear with us.

  IE 4.0 to 5.0 
  If you have these browser versions and still cannot see Indian language scripts, then:

               1.Go to View > Encoding. Make sure that the "Auto Select" option is checked 
               2.Go back to View > Encoding. Now select the "User Defined" option. 
               3.Clear the cache of your browser 
                           1.Open the Tools menu of your browser and choose Internet Options 
                           2.In the General tab, see the section on "Temporary Internet files" 
                           3.Click the "Delete Files button" 
                           4.Click OK 
               4.Restart the browser or open the site in a new instance of the browser window 



  Windows

Download Fonts (if nothing else works) 
  If you are still facing problems viewing any of the Indian language scripts, please download the appropriate fonts. 


The word "Arjuna" appears in the appropriate script beside the language options. If you cannot see the word appear properly you should download the font. Click on the language you wish to use, to download the required font and "Run" the downloaded ".exe" file. Each individual file size is around 175K. These fonts have been created at CDAC. Free download of these fonts is also available from the CDAC site.

If yoy do not wish to run the ".exe" files, you may copy the fonts given below directly in your fonts directory.
To download a font, click on the language you wish to use. Copy the font in c:/windows/fonts directory of your machine.

 Linux Users 

  You will need to download the font on your machine

 If you have root permission: 
Locate the fonts directory for true type X-Window font server. It may be running as either xfs or xfstt. (Some possible names for the font directory may be usr/share/fonts or usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts) 
              Download the font (The list of fonts is given below ) 

To download a font, click on the language you wish to use.

              Copy the fonts in the fonts directory 
              Reboot the system 



   If you do not have root permission.
 (This method may not work for all versions of linux. If it does not, please contact your system administrator.) 
        Create a directory for storing the fonts. If you call this directory 'fonts', the directory path will be $HOME/fonts 
        Download the font (The list of fons is given below) 

To download a font, click on the language you wish to use.

        Copy the fonts in the fonts directory 
        Change current directory to $HOME/fonts 
        Run ttmkfdir>fonts.dir (this will create a 'fonts.dir' file in the directory) 
        Run ttmkfdir>fonts.scale (this will create a 'fonts.scale' file in the directory) 
        Now run the commands: 

                 /usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp+ $HOME/fonts

                 /usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp rehash

       The fonts are installed

      In the Netscape window 
        1.Go to Edit>Preferences>fonts and define the encoding to be 'User-defined' 
        2.Then go to View>Character Set and select 'User-Defined
